A plain jane Mustang II in immaculate condition. That is awesome. Personally I would totally rock a Mustang Cobra II or King Cobra. Plastic fantastic. Engine swap down the line and piss off everyone who thinks it’s just a Mustang II... LOL!

I had one with a 302 and I’m sure that engine made at least  91 horsepower.

Oh, it was definitely one of the lamest excuses for an automobile that was ever foisted upon the driving public. (The Fairmont Futura was worse, and the Tempo, years later, was worse still.) I’d add mid-90s Ranger to the list* , but someone would call me a poophead or something, so I won’t.

*Actually, it was a robust, dependable conveyance, just a miserable  thing to drive.

It gets a lot of hate, but without it the mustang would have died like the challenger did.  And nothing that debuted in 1974 has aged well. (domestics) Some interesting cars from the era, but this is the point where the big three just gave up.

It also brought it back closer to the size of the original 1965 Mustang (actually smaller and lighter) , after it started getting kind of bloated in the early ‘70s. I f the Mustang had continued on that trend of getting fatter and plusher it would have wound up a full-size personal luxury coupe eventually, especially with the 1970s emissions strangled V8s. And Ford already had the Thunderbird.

I mean, what was the alternative, really? Stick with the ‘60s vintage Falcon platform and carry on with the muscle car styling? The muscle car era was over, no matter what. Emissions rules meant that those V8s were not going to make great power, rising insurance rates meant that the younger Baby Boomers were having trouble affording muscle cars (while the older Baby Boomers were starting to move to more family practical cars), and you had the effects of  the oil embargo and fuel economy regulations to worry about, too. Ford had carried the original platform as far as it was going to go by 1973, it was either kill the car, or make a radical change to suit the new reality.

I think the shameless malfeasance of the Dubya era emboldened the current gang of racists and cons.  The Dubya era showed them that evil can win elections, and that there are no real consequences. Rumsfeld and Cheney etc are still wealthy men with all the freedom in the world.
